The Most Important Piece of Hunting Equipment

by Bob Darrah

Over the years there have been arguments that will last longer than life itself. Which came first, the chicken or the egg? If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, does it really make a sound?

Through all walks of life there are conundrums that can only be answered by individuals that are brave enough to make the choice. But then, there will always be the question.....are these choices correct? They are for them, but not necessarily for anyone else. It's these choices that make everyone one of us hunters that can't wait to get out in the field and participate in the sport we love so totally different in so many ways.

To some of us it all comes down to the rifle, shotgun, bow, or any other weapon we choose for hunting our quarry. It may have been handed down to us from a parent or grandparent. Or perhaps, we just went out and bought a new toy because we read somewhere it's the greatest weapon ever! Regardless of how we got it, it's ours, and we are going to use it to fill our freezer or to hang a magnificent trophy on the wall. Does that make it the "Most Important" piece of hunting equipment? Maybe.....I once thought it did! Until of course, I realized that there are umpteen brands of guns with hundreds of different calibers, and don't even get me started on all of the archery technology that has been booming onto the market over the last few years.

Ok, ok, if this isn't it, let's take a look at what else we have to choose from. Aha...It's got to be my rifle scope! Hmmm.....but I grew up in the Midwest watching my Dad shoot animal after animal from 100 to 200 yards, and he never had anything but open sites. Is this to say anybody can do that? Shoot no! I've got to have my scope! Along the same lines, I would have to have an excellent rangefinder in hand before I could tell whether the animal was 100 or 200 yards away. Of course, if I didn't have an excellent pair of binoculars, I probably wouldn't have seen the animal in the first place!

With all of these valid arguments, I'm beginning to think there are no right answers to the question. So, with that in mind, maybe every hunter that goes out to enjoy this great sport should stick with what works for them and makes them comfortable.

With all of the hunting optics, trail cameras, and hunting accessories, it won't do any of us any good without a healthy amount of respect for the sport and the common sense to take care of our equipment. So as the new season quickly approaches, clean your guns and get plenty of rest. We all have plenty enough to worry about without dwelling on the rank of our equipment!
